Recommended Creams

Before going further, we want to reassure you.

There’s a ton of information out there about cloth diapers… and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Our goal here is simple: to guide you, not make things more complicated. Good news: many babies don’t even need diaper cream. In that case, it’s best not to apply anything at all. But if a cream is needed to treat diaper rash, choose it carefully.

Some creams contain ingredients that can make fabrics water-resistant, reduce absorbency, and cause odors. In short, not all creams are compatible with cloth diapers.

A cream described as “cloth-diaper compatible” means it won’t affect the diaper’s absorbency or performance. You’ll find a list of recommended creams at the end of this text.

Since there are many other creams on the market, our list is not exhaustive. Its purpose is to help you make informed choices.

Zinc creates a barrier against moisture, just like coconut oil, and can be very effective in treating diaper rash. However, it stains easily, so a liner is necessary to protect the diaper.

In addition, many zinc-based creams contain ingredients to avoid with cloth diapers, such as petroleum derivatives, which reduce urine absorbency.

Ingredients to avoid: Petrolatum (Vaseline), mineral oil, cod liver oil, paraffin, and certain waxes and clays that may stain diapers.

Tip if a diaper is stained
Wash the diaper in hot water with detergent.
Scrub the stains with dish soap.
Wash again in hot water.
Your diaper should return to its original condition.
